Nightmare Patrol

In an effort to both provide employment to the warriors brought to the Citadel and protect their new charges within the city of L’Arc en Reves, the Weaver of Hope has created the Nightmare Patrols. Those that fight for and sometimes even with him, face the various Nightmares that roam the city at will.

As such, combatant members of the patrols will earn a pay of two rubies ($100), an Emerald ($50), and a Sapphire ($50) per week ($200 total), for every week that they survive, and in the event of death, they’ll receive three diamonds ($100 ea) upon reawakening. (Although, if they die too often, they may find themselves reassigned to one of the Patrol’s non combatant roles.) Non-combatants - triage medics, cooks, armorers - will receive,  four rubies ($100), one Amethyst strands ($20) and one Lapis Lazuli ($10) strand per week.

Once they take the stairs down into the Patrol Headquarters, they will find a vaulted stone lobby filled with comfortable leather chairs scattered throughout the central room. Surrounding the lobby is a series of arches, behind which they will find a simple triage room for the treatment of minor wounds, a weapon’s smith, a simple mess hall that serves light, cold rations and a fully stocked armory.

The armory contains weapons from every world that has contributed PC’s as well as more traditional weapons. The only weapons that cannot be found in the armory are game-breaking ones - so no weapons of mass destruction, no lasers that can destroy the entire city, etc. The patrols will be split into teams of 2 or 3 members, who will patrol in Day or Night shifts. These groups are essentially permanent, though members will be added to make teams of three as we go. The Patrol Teams are assigned as below:

the_citadel_mods: (Default)
Upon entering their assigned room your characters will find a few subtle things indicating their arrival was anticipated. Resting upon the vanity in each room is a long strand of gemstones, $100 worth though what types of stones each person gets are varied. Along with this is an envelope addressed to the room’s occupant in elegant cursive, sealed with scarlet wax embossed with a monogram of the letter D. The letter contained therein reads as follows.

To our most cherished guests,
First let us extend our sincerest apologies to all of you for this inconvenience. As a means of compensation for your time and dreams we would like to offer you a small allowance to help you get settled into the city. Unfortunately, to ensure the prosperity of our fair city we must remind you that your reservation at the Dormitan’s Repose will only be valid for two weeks, at which point additional arrangements will need to be made.

To ensure you needn’t spend our gift to you on such necessities as clothing you will also find that your closets will bear additional attire of a manner similar to that which you arrived with, as well as a re-provisioning of the basic stores within your pantry to last the remainder of your reservation. We offer these as tokens of our gratitude for your aid when our need was dire and for your continued patience as we work to correct the damages caused to the Reflexum.

Respectfully Yours,
The Weaver of Dignity

True to her word everyone will find a few changes of clothes in their closets in addition to the funds left to each new resident. More information on the money system of L’Arc en Reves can be found here.

Glinn

Welcome Spa

At the center of Glinn is a large circular pool of shallow water, barely reaching one’s waist at its deepest point despite the fine trickling waterfalls that descend from the upper layer. A fine mist hovers over the edges of the pool and Rainbows are often seen dancing off the crystalline water. Smooth round stepping stones are scattered throughout it to ensure residents can get through it without getting wet. Surrounding this pool is a narrow building comprised mostly of open archways and small private rooms which acts as both the welcome center and a day spa. It is this pool after all that all new residents arrive at, as all mirrorways at the Gates are connected to this one place.

Dormitan’s Repose
All new arrivals are given a room in a shared suite in the inn attached to the Welcome Center as a part of their welcome to the City. More information on the Dormitan’s Repose can be found on the Housing Page.

Patrol Headquarters

In an effort to combat the lingering threat of nightmares across the city the Weaver of Hope himself has offered the organization of a patrol unit. This seems to be the profession of choice for a great many of the battle-hardened residents of the city, those that were fighters before coming here. Located to the far side of Welcome Center, beneath the center of Spadom. The Patrol Headquarters is a grand circular structure built over a series of openings in the ground. Take the central stairs down, and there you will find the duty board as well as the armory. The winding stairways on either side of the shorter central staircase lead to a set of holding cells set into the ground beneath the armory. These holding cells are built as a single circuit that run beneath the pillared circle above ground. There are a great many wards and barriers embedded into the earth via these pillars, partially through Hope's technical expertise and partially through Innocence's own protective magics.

The Zero

Player-run: Bucky Barnes [personal profile] not_a_commie

The tavern is a warm welcoming place if you can get past the sight of the slightly threatening looking owner, pub food, home cooking, the place is all dark wood and warm colors. A place to go and relax and try to forget where you are for a few moments. But not the type of place you are likely to find any health food. You might be able to get a salad out of the owner if he likes you.

Spadom

The University
As befitting of one of the only areas in L’Arc en Reves with electricity the University itself is a rather modern building made of glass and concrete and steel as opposed to the seamless stone that forms most of the other buildings. The classrooms are all large and spacious, the wide windows giving the illusion of space. The only trouble is that, as with the rest of the city, the princess and her residents have dreamt of the structure and function of the place but the staff for such a facility is still lacking. The residents will have to begin building a staff if they ever wish to see the University running to its capacity.

The Library

Just beyond the university itself is another building that does not fit the overall theme of the city. The pale stone again replaced by large amounts of glass and, in this case, wood. The library is a broad spacious building, long and layered but only consisting of a single story despite its height. Within the library there are books from all different worlds, anything a character can imagine they can probably find a book on it here. Anything from the history of a mythological race to cookbooks for things like “The Use of Wasabi in Sweets and Desserts”. Anyone trying to do any extensive research on the city itself or the worlds it draws from will unfortunately find that, while history books exist in abundance, they often have conflicting information. Every dreamer and ever world that connects to L’Arc en Reves has a different account of historical events and as such the history books available reflect that.

Niramaya

The Hospital
In keeping with the overall theme of nature in Niramaya the hospital itself has been turned into something of a park. After all it is just as important for rest and relaxation as it is modern medicine. The hospital is set up something like Dormitan’s Repose, the level of technology varying with each floor. Some are very primitive while others have state of the art equipment and electricity that is hard to find outside of Spadom. Whatever methods of treatment you prefer, though, the staff is very skilled and between magic and science most injuries can be healed quite swiftly. Within the Hospital there is an aura of calm, a peacefulness that is magically enforced. Anyone with violent or aggressive intent will not be allowed to enter and any attempt at expressing such things will find a resident magically transported to the rooftop garden instantaneously.

Fantasia

Fantasia Opera House

One of the many benefits of effecting the environment through dreams and imagination is that it can make for positively magnificent theater performances. Though the performances tend to be rare, due to the control and experience required by the actors to manipulate not only themselves but the entire performance, they are definitely a spectacle worth seeing.

Prani

Luminescence
The main retailer of mirrors within the city. Their focus is, of course, Lume and they have two locations within the city specializing in them, one of which is attached to the Welcome Spa where new arrivals are credited for their first. These shops also have a number of other accessories, photo frames, jewelry, and the like. In addition to the two Lume shops they also have a large store dedicated to additional mirrors and are, in fact, the ones responsible for much of the mirrored wall murals in some of the larger buildings.

The Bank

The walls of this building are paneled from floor to ceiling with shards of mirrors. The effect is quite grandoise but the mirrors are there for functionality. When presented with a key by the account owner a bank employee can rearrange those shards to form a mirrorway that is a secured connection to one of the many vaults buried in the mines beneath the city.

Musei

Bonne Nuit

Bonne Nuit is one of the more dangerous places of business in Musei. The building itself resembles a Victorian opium den, Asian themes, lush cushions, and the entire building overcast with a reddish hue. What is sold by the Lady of the House is something far more hazardous than a simple drug however. For a surprisingly manageable price one can buy their perfect dreams. A hallucinogen that enhances the patron’s fantasies so much that reality and the dream world intersect. Sensations are enhanced and the lovely employees of the House can, through the overlay of dream on reality, literally become whomever you so desire. Anything can happen and be so real and vivid that it will seem more real than life outside the House. It is this, more than the properties of the drugs, that is the true risk of addiction afforded by the House. In a city where dreams can come true Bonne Nuit is the one place where they are guaranteed.

ExpandCharacter FAQ )

What if my character kills another PC character in game?
Anyone that commits murder within the city will find themselves sharing their victim's pain. Pain so overwhelming they will lose consciousness. Upon waking they will find themselves in a small crystalline cell where they will remain for the same duration of time that it takes their victim to be revived. While locked in this cell they will be subject to the Weaver of Despair's influence, giving them horrific and often violently traumatic nightmares that are so powerful there will be no distinction between waking and dreaming.

The Imperial Weavers

Currently there is very little known about the Weavers themselves. They control many aspects of the city but are rarely seen within the city itself. Yet when they are, strange occurrences are known to happen simply from the latent power of their will. They seem to reside in the Tower far above the city, a place far removed from the residents of the city, where they maintain an absolute barrier between the Tower and the Citadel.

Over time more information will be made available and the Weavers themselves may address the residents periodically, thus giving away small bits of information. But overall they are the unseen keepers of the Princess' Tower and guardians of the Citadel as a whole.

Weaver of Innocence

She is, by far, the most energetic of the four. Possessing a guileless openness and curiosity to match her childish appearance, the Weaver of Innocence is the one most often seen by others. She is known to escape into the city from time to time to play with both the residents and the fluidity of L'Arc en Reves' structure.

She is the one that has placed the barriers within the city to prevent those pure of heart from entering into the places where innocence is destroyed.

Weaver of Despair

Often shrouded and cloaked in black veils the Weaver of Despair rarely leaves the great Tower, preferring instead to hide herself away. However, when she does interact with others on those infrequent occasions, her words are sharp and poisonous, laced with a cold rage that is reflected in every shift of her icy gaze.

Weaver of Dignity

She may not be seen within the city itself very often, but the Weaver of Dignity does make her presence known throughout the city with some regularity. She herself seems much like a princess - cool and collected, perfectly elegant and poised as she takes on the role of leader amongst the quartet. Her word is law, and if the other Weavers follow it unquestioningly, then it is a safe idea to assume that it would be most unwise for the residents to defy her.

Weaver of Hope

Hope is a fickle thing at times, but the Weaver of Hope has a determination and perseverance that is to be admired. He may not be the leader of the four but he is often the one who comes up with their plans and strategies. He is, in fact, a brilliant man driven by a fierce need to put things to right... at very nearly any cost. Because of his dedication to his work, he is often absent from anyone's knowledge for long stretches of time - only to reappear in an instant with plans and ideas designed to thrust the city into action.

The City Guard

The guards in L'Arc en Reves are not paid residents of the city. As a matter of fact, they're not humanoid at all. They are, in fact, animated suits of armor. They cannot be bribed or persuaded from their assigned tasks - that of the eyes and ears for the Weavers' throughout the city. They are little more than the conduit with which the Weavers use in order to exercise their will on the city.

If any resident cares to get into a fight with any member of the City Guard they will find themselves fighting a ruthless, empty suit of armor. Armor that wields a heavy ornate halberd with deadly accuracy.

Player Information:
Name:
Age:
Contact info: (personal lj, IM usernames, email, plurk, etc)
Current characters:

Character Information:
Name: Please note that character's names should be listed in the manner that is appropriate for their culture.
Canon point: With OCs this is simply a brief summary of what was going on before they came to the Citadel
Age:

Appearance: Pictures are acceptable but we do wish to see at least a solid paragraph on things such as mannerisms and expression which are often not fully conveyed by a single image. Because an original character, like a book character will have attributes that a PB will not be able to convey we require both the written description as well as the PB you will be using.

Setting:Where does your character come from? What year, what planet, what country. What type of setting is it? This section should tell us everything from the genre for the world the character’s story comes from. (Steampunk, sci-fi, urban fantasy, epic fantasy, crime/mystery) to the details about their home town, their living conditions. The overall attitudes of the world you’re drawing them from should also be included. Culture, laws, education... even the smallest changes in perceptions can affect all of these things so be sure you are thorough. The more different your character’s world is from our own the more important this becomes.

Background: This section is for your character’s story. What makes them who they are? What has happened to form them into the person they are today. This is especially important because as an original character there is no book or movie for us to refer to here. This is your one chance to tell us all there is to know about the character.

Previous Game History: Please give an overview of what happened to the character, how long ICly (and OOCly if time runs differently) they were in the game, and what character development happened. Be sure to give a good idea of how the game changed the character's personality and motivations. If this does not apply to your character you may simply put n/a!

Personality: This is the section we expect to see the most detail in. We want to know how your character thinks, acts, talks, dresses, moves... as much as you can think of about what makes up who they are. Please take your time and think about both the character’s motivations and their outward selves. Be sure to include character strengths and weaknesses here, as well.

Skills and Powers: This is the place for any particular skills and powers the characters have! Be sure to elaborate on things useful in everyday life as well as combat or supernatural powers.

If your character has a dimension-hopping power, please be aware that it will be disabled. Any other teleportation powers will remain intact within the city itself but they will be unable to teleport to the castle or any of the gate islands. For characters who are canonly deities or extremely powerful, please be prepared to have their abilities limited. Any limitations you would like to do voluntarily should be mentioned here!

For characters without canon superhuman powers, there will be points within the game where they can gain powers, ICly, after they are in play.

Items: What is your character coming into the game with? What do they keep in their pockets? Is there anything of sentimental value that they keep on their person at all times. What is important to them? Please keep in mind that most of these characters are entering the Citadel from their dreams so items that may have been lost or broken can be made whole again in their dreams. This is also where you would note if you plan to have a pet or animal companion accompany your character.

We also ask that you include a picture here for the compact mirror you are choosing to use for your character! If you are stuck, especially for the more masculine characters, you can also look at cigarette holders as well.

Writing samples:
Action: This sample should be a network post from your character. It is not required to be their introductory post, in fact we’d rather prefer it not be! This is a chance to think about the mischief your character might be getting into a week or more after their arrival. Please bear in mind that, while network posts can be quite short, this is meant to demonstrate your handle on the character’s “voice” and as such it should be long enough to show that. Mannerisms, tone, and the type of broadcast being presented are also things that should be included. Even if it is simply your character speaking we would like at least some actual action showing their tone while doing so.

Third Person Prose: For this sample, feel free to use an NPC for minor interaction, if you like. However, be sure the focus is on your character and their thoughts and actions. Feel
free to be creative within the game environment, whether it’s your character’s first reaction or something that might happen after they’ve been around for a while. Length isn’t as important as quality, but please give at least a couple of solid paragraphs.

In World: For original characters, we would like an additional prose sample, in any form you like, showing the character interacting in their home world. Give us a feel for how your character interacts with their surroundings on a daily basis. You can chose to illustrate a “day in the life” or something more dramatic from the character’s recent history. Ideally your history and world overview will give us enough information to contextualize a snippet out of the character’s life. If you find yourself needing to explain anything more than your characters reactions through the writing you may need to go back and expand on previous sections.

Any questions and concerns go here:

Within the Citadel mirrors are not only a means of travel but also of communication. Upon arrival every resident will be allowed to choose a compact mirror, called a Lume, which they will discover is connected with every other mirror in the city. Any mirror can be a means of communication, save the ones used to transport, the Mirrorway. Almost every home in L’Arc en Reves is equipped with at least one vanity to make posting easier from home and, as with most things in the city, it is a simple matter of will to change the settings of a post, making it a private communication or openly available, video or voice only.

Because these mirrors are in no way linked to their owners they function quite differently from the communication devices in other games. A character may have any number of compacts in varying themes to suit their mood or outfits. Only the first will be free, however. After that, it’ll cost them depending on how ornate the rest are.

Dreams within the Citadel are a thing of wonder.

In addition to the usual audio and video posts the mirror network can tap into the dreams of a character. It can be something as simple as a passing thought of “man I wish so-and-so could see this” to a desperate plea for help but as in all things in the city the characters are far more likely to affect their surroundings in a dreaming state than they are when waking. This applies doubly so to the network itself.

While the dreamer may notice no differences the city is built on dreams and it is through their dreams that a resident becomes more likely to alter their surroundings. Dreams manifest themselves in little ways, whether the character is ‘awake’ or dreaming in some way. Be it a simple daydream as they stroll through the city, or as they sleep soundly in their beds at night, the way they can affect the city around them is nearly limitless. A dream about strolling through a field of wildflowers may manifest so that the dreamer wakes with flower petals scattered over their room or a similar daydream may call shadowboxes bright with flowers in being, each one in full bloom there in every window they pass, only to disappear with their passing. Dreaming of a beloved friend or lover may manifest as a lingering scent of perfume hovering in the room. There are virtually no limits to what can be achieved through the powers of dreams.

And what few limits there are only affect the ways in which a dream may manifest itself. Physical harm is one of the few limitations, the dreamer may be on the brink of death in their dreams but when they awake there will simply be a few scrapes and bruises. If they dream of drowning they may wake to find their pillow and hair still wet.

New residents will find that dreams reflected on the Mirror Network reveal more than just the image. Strong emotion can be projected as well, if the one watching were unfortunate enough to touch the mirror’s surface, the very image itself.

Be careful when touching a sleeping dreamer, for there is a danger in touch.

Touch can connect one to another, and in the connection, get pulled into the dreamers sweetest dream - or their darkest nightmare. Friends or lovers sleeping together, where their thoughts and dreams are in close proximity, they too run the risk of having their dreams merge into one. Once one is pulled into another’s dream, they are no longer on the outside looking in and must, therefore, interact within the dream.

Merged dreams are considered closed logs and should be posted to the log community, though players are free to post a link on the network if they want it to be commented on - just keep in mind that a merged dream that takes weeks to complete would make it difficult to have other players comment on, unless it gets posted to the community as complete.

The City

The City of L’Arc en Rêves encompases a wide circular island, the main one of the over half dozen that float amongst the clouds. The city itself is built in two layers with all of the commercial districts arching over the lower level which is primarily residential. Travel between the two levels rarely happens via stairways. The same type of mirrorways that guide the residents from the Gates to the Welcome Spa connect the different levels and districts.

Glinn

The lower level as a whole is referred to as Glinn and while small privately owned shops can be found scattered throughout the lower level it is almost entirely residential. The water source for the entire city winds through the lower level in a series of wide pools and narrower canals.

Prani

Above Glinn wide boardwalks and narrow bridges arc over the city like a complex spiderweb. Directly above the Welcome Spa is Prani, the main shopping district. The architecture in Prani is somewhat crowded, the buildings mimicking the spiraling towers of the castle which floats above the city. Throughout Prani thin canals and streams cut through the stone, streaming off the edges in thin falls. Anything you could possibly wish to purchase is available in Prani, from the necessities in the marketplace to extravagant clothing and other luxuries in the boutiques.

Surrounding Prani are the three main districts.

Fantasia

The entertainment district is a vibrantly colored part of the city where the streets are often painted and rollercoasters soar over many of the buildings at random. A sizable amusement park takes up a large portion of the district. Many of the buildings here seem to be impossibly built and range from carnival goods to costumes, banquet halls to movie theaters. The Fantasia Opera House is located in this district as well as a stadium for sporting events.

Musei & Kosmar

One narrow boardwalk stemming from Fantasia is known as Musei, the pleasure district. Nightclubs gradually give way to strip clubs and even brothels. The theaters show a different kind of movie and the area itself hovers above the dark section of Glinn known as Kosmar. Here the streets are narrow and crowded, the buildings small and decrepit, dark alleyways serving as homes as often as the buildings they run between. Kosmar is a place forged of nightmares and as such reflect the darkest parts of the city. The dark shadows prevalent in this area often give way to monstrous nightmare beasts and one is as likely to be attacked by the shadows as they are by another person.

From the nightmare infested slums of Kosmar many people will work above in Musei, dealing in darker pleasures than what is openly sold in the shops.

This is one of the few areas where mirrorways become unreliable and it is highly recommended that the stairways coiling between the levels be utilized lest you enter a mirrorway and end up somewhere far darker than you intended. Kosmar and Musei are both dangerous areas and should be entered with caution.

Niramaya

The medical district is about the only place within the city that one will find much greenery. Nearly everything is made of smoothly carved stone but within Niramaya the theme is healing. In a land of dreams it is less physical healing that is sought here as it is emotional and psychological. To that effect there are grand gardens and a few more spas. That’s not to say the hospital itself is anything short of amazing but the staff are as likely to try to help you cope with whatever manifested your darker more violent dreams as they are to help to heal your physical body.

Spadom

The academic district is the only place where electricity is obviously available. Throughout the rest of the city lighting and other modern day luxuries are controlled by an odd mix of what seems to be magic and the intent of the dreamer. Within Spadom, and even in some areas of Glinn below it, lights have switches, clocks have plugs, and one is far more likely to find the building furnished in a modern fashion. There is a University and an expansive Library both of which are equipped with computers. These machines do have access to the mirror network but posts tend to be a little glitchy due to the combination of science and spellcraft.
